Thank you, John Oliver, for taking down the “she’s someone’s daughter/sister/mother” thing at the root. I get the intention behind it is not bad, but seriously-my value as a human should not be defined by how my being hurt would affect my father, brother, or male partner. It should be defined by how it would affect ME. I am someone with worth and value independent of the men in my life, as are all women. We are not tangential sub-people who only exist as we are related to me, we are people. Full stop.

You have to understand, and i’m not making any excuses for her but if you look at her background and how she grew up, I mean we all have dysfunction in our family, a lot of us have to deal with alcoholic relatives and things like that but she’s, I even hate to say she comes from a dysfunctional background because that doesn’t even get close to it. I mean not many of us have seen our dad arrested at gun point in front of our faces or had to sit in child protective services when we were 8 years old while strangers decide where we live or have to deal with abusive relatives and harassment and neglect and abandonment….You don’t have a life like that and become Alex Morgan or Abby Wambach. The fact that she is where she is, as far as the most successful women’s keeper in the world i think, is amazing to me…Again i’m not giving her a pass card, i’m just saying this is her family dynamic, she’s grown up with violence and punching and guns and alcohol, this is the way her family functions.
